steam punk projects
I have been toying around with a few ideas for some basic armour for steam punk characters and hit upon something loosely based on that used by Ned Kelly and his gang. That of course lead me to thinking about how it came into use and other factors, until i finally hit on the though of creating a fictitious army unit. This is very much a work in progress and the following is only a rough draft write up but i thought i would get the idea out there.

Perhaps one of the more unusual units ever to emerge during the steam age was that of the 63rd heavy infantry know as the “ironsides.”
Land and air ships reigned supreme over the land and her Majesties navy continued to dominate the seas. The humble infantry man had to contend with all manner if new and infernal inventions that traditional troops could barley repulse, lightening cannons seared entire ranks before they could advance and new applications of steam technologies saw more frequent use of heat rays and energy weapons being issued beside more conventional arms.
In response to this growing technological warfare the Imperial army demanded that a new type of soldier be created, one that could face these and other threats whilst still being able to operate in the traditional role of the infantryman.
Inspired by the daring of the Kelly gang of Australia the imperial army created an armoured soldier capable of surviving combat in the extremes of the new age battlefield. The first company of these new soldiers was raised in 1882 at Auckland New Zealand from veterans of the land wars, men used to unconventional warfare and in accordance with the character of the country, less resistant to the application of new ideas.
